Healing Intergenerational Trauma

Our 2024 Healing Retreat was a success!

We’re excited to celebrate the success of our recent annual retreat, Healing Intergenerational Trauma, held September 5-8, 2024, in sunny Sacramento, CA. Exonerees, family members, and loved ones from near and far came together to create a space dedicated to healing and connection, focusing on restoring and strengthening relationships affected by wrongful convictions.

Participants engaged in sessions designed to foster healing conversations and transformative listening, which encouraged deeper understanding of the experiences and impacts of wrongful conviction on each individual. These sessions not only emphasized communication skills but also nurtured empathy and mutual support among participants.

We incorporated restorative practices, music, and tai chi to help explore and address intergenerational trauma in holistic ways. During free time, attendees enjoyed live music, comedy, and shared meals, further enhancing community bonds.

As we closed the retreat, there was a shared sentiment of commitment to strengthening and expanding this network as a vital source of support for one another. Together, we are building a resilient community dedicated to healing and growth.

Shout out to all who joined – it was great to meet those coming to their first retreat with us AND so good to see those who’ve attended in the past. We were happy to hear all the positive feedback for how meaningful and helpful this gathering was for you.

Participant Testimonials:

Extremely grateful to our facilitators Ernest Mark and Greg Hodge, who not only bring incredible skill and knowledge to the development of our retreat programming, but also hold such great enthusiasm and dedication for making a positive impact within the exoneree community.

This event was sponsored by Kaiser Permanente.

2nd Annual Hike for Justice

We enjoyed a beautiful day among majestic Redwoods and waterfalls for our 2nd Hike for Justice at Cataract Falls, CA.

This year’s hike guided by 510 Hikers founder, Nicholas Collins, facilitated exercise, community, and fun for about 40 attendees – a combination of exonerees and family members as well as community friends and supporters. Participants also learned about the harmful impacts of tobacco through African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC).

This event is such a wonderful opportunity for us to come together and give our physical and mental wellbeing a boost – we’re looking forward to the next hike!

Our 2023 Annual Retreat was a Success!

Exonerated Nation understands the trauma suffered with wrongful conviction and incarceration, including the harmful impact to family units and immeasurable damage to bonds with family members and loved ones.

In keeping with our intent to create healing pathways for exonerated individuals, this year’s annual retreat, held in August 2023, was dedicated to healing, rebuilding, and strengthening those family relationships that are so important to overall success and wellbeing after exoneration.

Exonerees participated in a four-day gathering with their loved ones to embrace ancestral wisdom and nurture their connections with each other in the calm, scenic surroundings of Asilomar, located in Pacific Grove, CA.

Participants were guided by a phenomenal facilitation team:  Safi Jiroh (LeaderSpring Center), Gregory Hodge (Brotherhood of Elders Network), Ernest Mark (Coaching and Consulting), and exoneree Arturo Jimenez. They created a beautiful healing container for exonerees and their loved ones, sharing seeds of wisdom, inspiration, and transformational communication skills, to strengthen relationships and family bonds.

Facilitator Collage

A special thank you to Kaiser Permanente for their generosity in supporting Exonerated Nation’s efforts and helping to make this event possible.

Exonerated Nation’s Advocacy Day was held February 28, 2003.  Ten (10) exonerees, with their supporters and EN board members, met with California legislators and shared their powerful testimonies to advocate for the immediate and long-term needs of California exonerees.

On March 21, 2023, the Public Safety Committee of the California State Assembly unanimously passed Exonerated Nation’s sponsored bill AB 997. The legislation will create a special fund at the Victim’s Compensation Board to pay for an exonoree’s mental health services. The money is allocated whenever the State of California approves a wrongful conviction claim at the Victim’s Compensation Board.   This means that exonorees will be able to find their own mental health provider and have the services paid for out of this special fund. AB 997 will next be heard at the Assembly Appropriations Committee in mid-May.
